5 Tips to Help You Research Your Dream

Do you have a dream, goal, or idea, but are having trouble getting started? Or, know a little bit about the topic, but need to learn a lot more? Have you gotten stuck?

Here are some tips to move you into action and help you research your idea….

  1. The Internet.
    • Use a Search Engine like Google, AltaVista, or Yahoo! Type in your topic “How to Write a Book”, “Running a Marathon”, “Learn to Sky Dive”, “Gourmet Cooking Schools”, etc. You will be overwhelmed with information to get you on your way. Be as specific as possible. For example, “How to Write a Romance Novel” is better than “How to Write a Novel”
    • Try www.FindArticles.com or www.magportal.com. These websites have access to millions of articles from all kinds of academic, industry, and general interest publications.

  2. Join a Group
    • Look in your local phone book
    • Look in your local newspaper. Many newspapers run free listings of local club meeting dates & times. Also, look in the classified ad section under Announcements or Free Listings
    • Look on the internet. Many international or national organizations will have the name and email address of a local chapter contact listed on the internet. Even small organizations have a website these days. Include the city location in your search such as “Auckland Property Investors”

  3. Attend a Conference
    • The international and national organizations you’ve found above all have an annual conference. What a great place to meet like minded people, attend seminars, and get motivated! There are often booths set up for retailers and merchants to sell products related to the conference topic. Again, a great source of information.

  4. Take a class
    • Check with your Community Education provider. This is a great place to find an introductory course on photography, painting, learning a new language, learning Tai Chi, etc. These classes are usually very affordable.
    • Your local University or Tech School may have a formal program or a casual night class on your topic.
    • Try Correspondence Schools or e-courses. Find these online through search engines like Google, Yahoo, and Alta Vista
    • Try Online Schools and courses. The new trend in online schools is Teleclasses. A Teleclass is where several students and a class leader call into the same phone line at “class time” and spend an hour together learning. There are also hundreds of courses that can be downloaded or taken online to learn at your own pace.

  5. Read a book or magazine
    • Try your local bookstore. If they don’t have anything in stock, they can inquire on their system for books on a specific topic and order it in.
    • Try your local Newsstand. It is amazing how many niche magazines are published! Buy a copy or treat yourself to a subscription.
    • Try Amazon.com. This is such a great place to shop for titles, authors, and ideas.

These don’t sound so hard to do, do they? Commit to take action this week to pursue one, or several, of these options. You will be one step closer to achieving your goal!
